Adam Haslett is the author of the short story collection You Are Not a Stranger Here, which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award and has been translated into fifteen languages. His essays and fiction have appeared in The New Yorker, The Nation, and The Atlantic Monthly among other publications. In 2006, he won the PEN/Malamud Award for accomplishment in short fiction. He has also won the PEN/Winship Award for the best book by a New England author.
Set against the backdrop of the build-up to the invasion of Iraq and completed the week Lehman Brothers collapsed, Haslett’s novel Union Atlantic revolves around four characters: Doug, a seemingly invulnerable banker; Charlotte, a retired schoolteacher; her brother Henry, who is President of the New York Federal Reserve; and Nate, a vulnerable teenager whose relationships with both Charlotte and Doug form the emotional heart of the book. Prescient and ambitious, Union Atlantic is a deeply affecting portrait of the modern gilded ageāthe first decade of the twenty-first century.
